Best Arguments for Ordering a Mobile Application
Check These Before You Order

📅 2020.08.26 - 👤 Borbély Viktor
In the past more than 10 years, when smartphones appeared, they brought a new format with them: apps. What does a mobile application offer more than a responsive webpage? If we have a serious intention to order a mobile application, then only our wallet can set limits to our concept. How do they perform in price-value ratio compared to well-established web pages? I explore this topic.
What Do Application Store Statistics Show
Let’s start with dry numbers because they rarely lie. Looking at statista.com indicators, it’s visible that mobile application downloads are unbroken. Year after year, alongside growing device numbers, app downloads also expand.
Number of mobile application downloads
worldwide between 2016 and 2019
According to the Apple App Store’s June 2020 report, the following categories make up 50% of downloads: Games (22%), Business (10%), Education (9%), Lifestyle (9%). From this, it’s outlined which are the winning directions. Looking from the end of the list, an interesting picture emerges: News, Medical, Photo and Video, Sports, Social Networking, Shopping, Music, etc. Each category represents about 2-3%. The low share can be explained by the fact that there’s the web for news; photo and video, music player come with the phone by default, pre-installed.
The chart below shows consumer spending on digital products. If we look at the EMEA region (Europe, Middle-East, Africa), then the projected growth is more than 150% from 2018 to 2022.
Consumer spending on mobile
applications worldwide in 2017, 2018 and 2022, by region, in billion USD.
In 2018, global mobile app revenue was more than $365 billion USD. In 2023, mobile applications are expected to generate more than $935 billion in revenue through paid downloads and in-app advertising.

2023, in billion USD.
The Freemium (Free + Premium) business model has proven itself well for manufacturers. Download for free, and if you’re already committed, then pay out the whole thing with small expenses.
Based on the above, it’s visible that with an appropriate revenue generation strategy, significant revenues can be generated.
Count These Into a Mobile App Project
You’ve decided that you’ll go ahead anyway. Ordering a mobile application is the final word!
The following tasks must be counted:
- Project planning
- User experience design (UX design)
- Interface design (UI design)
- Implementation, which usually makes up the largest part of the work
- Marketing tasks: before, at launch, after
- Updating applications (at least semi-annually), bug fixes
Development time, and thereby some of the costs, can be reduced with a good cross-platform. It makes a difference whether an application needs to be written twice or once, and for Android or iOS only small things need to be adjusted.
I use the Flutter cross-platform. I previously wrote about its advantages here. Numerous others exist, it’s worth consulting with the client beforehand about what functions they expect. Are there limitations that cannot be fulfilled or can only be fulfilled with difficulty?
Costs Are Only One Aspect
It happens that for a company, a mobile app represents a business card. It can be put out, shown that this is also available in their portfolio. This is a kind of prestige thing.
Let’s not forget about the desired functions. Do we want to send recurring notifications to our users, which can improve our marketing costs? Is GPS function needed? Perhaps we dreamed up a captivating game? Is it important that the user can pull it out anytime offline?
As help, I collected a list to give ideas about what needs to be considered before the decision. The list includes numerous aspects worth thinking through. Based on the function list, it will be outlined what we will need: app or webpage?
